Celebrating African Heritage: Highlights from African Child Day 2025

On June 20, 2025, the Healthy Women Association brought together families, women, youth, and newcomers at Sullivan’s Community Hall in Surrey to celebrate the International Day of the African Child. This free, family-friendly event offered a vibrant platform to honour African heritage through storytelling, music, dance, spoken-word poetry, and visual arts.

With over 100 attendees ranging from ages 5 to 65, the evening was filled with warmth, joy, and cultural pride. The event also empowered immigrant women and youth to share their stories and talents, fostering meaningful conversations and community connection.

Our Highlights:

  • Live performances by local African artists and spoken-word poets

  • Interactive art activities and community dialogue

  • Information booths on settlement, education, and job-readiness resources

  • Delicious refreshments prepared by volunteer chefs

  • Youth facilitators and volunteers helping lead the event spirit

We are especially grateful to the City of Surrey for their support through a $1,500 arts grant and venue access, along with Sound Rentals, our performers, and all volunteers who made the event possible.

As we reflect on the success of this year's celebration, we’re already planning for June 20, 2026, aiming to make next year’s event even more impactful.

Stay connected with us as we continue building inclusive spaces where culture, creativity, and community thrive!
